QUESTION 3 / 6 The human factor

What should technology take off HR's plate, so people can focus on people?

"Our main challenge is that we're only two people at L&D." We hear some version of this on almost every call.

4 min read For HR and L&D teams Includes a team discussion guide
Small teams serve whole organizations, and much of their week goes on production work: editing videos in three different tools, reformatting slides, packaging SCORM files, answering the same questions again and again.

The same pattern shows up in onboarding. New hires depend on a few experts who teach by hand, and when those experts are busy, onboarding slows down. One HR director worried that poor onboarding "leads the person to quit."
THE INSIGHT
Automate the production and the repetition, and protect the relationships. If a task depends on trust, judgement or empathy, keep a person in it. If it's formatting, scheduling or answering a question that's already documented, let technology take it.
Discuss with your team
  • 01
If we tracked one week, how much of our time would go on production and admin versus time with people?
  • 02
Which questions do employees ask us again and again, even though the answer exists somewhere?
  • 03
If each of us got back four hours a week, where would that time go?
What to do next
  • Run a one-week time audit.
List recurring tasks and roughly how long each takes.
  • Sort them into two piles:
repeatable and rule-based, or dependent on judgement and relationships.
  • Take one repetitive task off the team entirely,
for example course formatting or first-line questions, and measure the time saved.
  • Decide in advance where the time goes,
such as manager coaching or new-hire check-ins, or more admin will fill it.
